DETECTIVES have spoken to shopkeepers who say they served missing millionaire Herman Rockefeller in the days since his mystery disappearance.
John and Jan Spiteri operate the Gordon General Store, 10km west of where Mr Rockefeller's car was found at Ballan on Monday.
After the Spiteris came forward, investigators yesterday searched an area at the rear of the store looking for any evidence that the property investor had been there.
Some items were taken for forensic examination.
The Spiteris identified Mr Rockefeller after recognising him from media reports.
Mr Spiteri said he believed Mr Rockefeller walked into the store, in Main Rd, Gordon, on Monday morning.
"We sighted him twice," Mr Spiteri said. "He looked a little bit dishevelled."
Mr Rockefeller disappeared after leaving a long-term car park at Melbourne Airport in his Toyota Prius at 9.30pm last Thursday.

The Herald Sun has been told Mr Rockefeller's Prius sat in a country lane for at least three days before the alarm was raised.
Ballan locals say the Prius was first seen at midnight on Friday by a farmer cleaning his truck in Carween Lane.
But the farmer did not realise the significance of what he had seen until Monday, when police appealed for information about the vehicle.
It is not known whether the laptop computer Mr Rockefeller was carrying as he left the airport was in the locked Toyota.
The car was found on Mr Rockefeller's 52nd birthday.
Police have been swamped with calls from the public claiming to have seen Mr Rockefeller, but his whereabouts remain a mystery.s
Detectives, including homicide squad investigators, were sifting through dozens of reports about the father-of two, who has not contacted his family since Thursday.
Other sightings have been claimed in Shepparton, Moorabbin and Frankston.
A spokeswoman for the Rockefeller family said they would not be making any more appeals to the public unless advised by the police.
She said the family still have hopes Mr Rockefeller is alive.
